چکیده
This paper presents an outline for a general I/O subsystem whose main objective is flexibility and customizability. It is based on the concept of frameworks, a technology that has proven to be extremely applicable in the operating systems area. We present our two-step model for application development, which separates the inherent computation of an application from platform specific performance tuning, and demonstrate how the framework can exploit application specific knowledge by adhering to this model. As a result, the framework can be used for a wide variety of applications, unlike many cur-

Static Task Allocation in Distributed Systems Using Parallel Genetic Algorithm
Over the past two decades, PC speeds have increased from a few instructions per second to several million instructions per second. The tremendous speed of today's networks as well as the increasing need for high-performance systems has made researchers interested in parallel and distributed computing. The rapid growth of distributed systems has led to a variety of problems. Task allocation is a...

Parallel and distributed systems archi tectures support parallel I O components Caching has been applied to distributed I O subsystems as a standard solution to the problems of fastening data accessibility and increasing data reliability Cache consistency mechanisms have been implemented in order to in uence the cache usefulness in a posi tive way This paper presents a new caching tech nique ba...
متن کاملA Requirements Analysis for Parallel KDD Systems
The current generation of data mining tools have limited capacity and performance, since these tools tend to be sequential. This paper explores a migration path out of this bottleneck by considering an integrated hardware and software approach to parallelize data mining. Our analysis shows that parallel data mining solutions require the following components: parallel data mining algorithms, par...
متن کاملExploring Data Compression in Distributed File Systems
The ever-growing imbalance between computation and I/O is one of the fundamental challenges for current petascale and future exascale systems. As these large systems become more compute heavy by design, it is becoming harder to support dataintensive applications with adequate performance. To narrow the gap between computation and I/O, parallel and distributed file systems have been introduced. ...
متن کاملArmada: A Parallel File System for Computational Grids
High-performance distributed computing appears to be shifting away from tightly-connected supercomputers to “computational grids” composed of heterogeneous systems of networks, computers, storage devices, and various other devices that collectively act as a single geographically distributed “virtual” computer. One of the great challenges for this environment is providing efficient parallel data...
